Finally, DREW released their debut album entitled “Sing With DREW” & for those who didn’t know them, DREW is a pop/acoustic band that dwells among Jakarta’s venue (sometimes also outside of Jakarta) playing from one gig to another (even play in small venue such as café or Mall). This band consist of Sashi Gandarum (cute girl who happens to be their vocalist, or probably it’s just my fetish for girl with guitar ^_^), Putra Praditya (Drummer who happens to be the 2nd most talkative guy besides vocalist), Aji Yudo (guitarist who also I don’t know have something interesting aura I guess) and Shanda Singgih (as bass who looks oldest and coolest among them ^_^). Quite a crew they got.
The album is pop, that’s for sure & surprisingly it’s kinda mellow (though there are upbeat tracks). Kinda surprise cuz if U watch them life, they usually plays energetic, sometimes kinda jazzy song (though most of them is cover version). The album contains 11 tracks, 4 English lyric & 7 Indonesian lyric songs. Oh, they also sang Ahmad Dhani’s song (the notorious @$$hole that strangely one of Indonesia’s best musician) entitled “Aku Takut Jatuh Cinta” as one of their track, which is kinda out of bound if U ask me, since they have other song that fit in this record, such as “Forgive Me”that they used to play live or they could put their first single & video clip “Unromantic” that could-would-should be a hidden track & awesome surprise for any DREWpies, nickname for their fans that also including me ^_^.
My favorite track, also the first track is “Stay With Me” a piano driven song (I love this song since they post it in Channel V amp site though the site now is gone), this song is a stand out cuz usually they are guitar driven song. The final touch is now the song has string section to give more ambiences to the song (which is success if U asks me). Other key track is “Siapa Bilang”, “Radio”, “High”, “I Love You Too”, quite a potential hits they got, an easy listening album I must say.
Problem with band that used to perform on stage, sometimes the energy or vibe that were shown on stage wasn’t completely intact on the record (though this kinda problem usually happens for rock band, especially garage rock or punk that lost the raw element of their music. This is also happens with DREW (though they are not rock band), some of the energy missing, like in their single “Radio”. If U watch them life (check on youtube, they got plenty of performance recorded there), the vibe is stronger and the impact is more “WOW” than the album (at least for me). Well, that’s not always the problem, their song “I Love You Too” is better this time than the acoustic/demo one that available on the net. But I guess watching them live is probably more compelling.
Overall, this album probably won’t offer U a ground breaking experience or something and probably that’s not what they made this band for. It’s not they start this band to change the world or something, these are labor of love by 4 people who lives their life with music and decides to have fun with music. A simple idea, a struggling for existence for bunch of people who just decides that they want to form a band (they noted on the thanks list one of Paramore’s lyric that the world doesn’t need another band but here they are ^_^).
Easy listening pop music without pretension to be sophisticated or try to hard to give something different, if that’s what U expects, this is for U, an entertaining album. Good pop music that didn’t sell out or following the mainstream in Indonesia. If U looking for something new, well guess U won’t get it here but give it a try and U see this is a great band in the making.
If I have to give a score, scale 1-10 this album is 7.5 approximately. It’s not that the album is bad (this is good actually, the record is well mixed and good overall) but I felt that it could be better. But as the debut album goes, they are screaming with potential & freshness. Can’t wait to see their next foray into Indonesia music scene. A debut album they should be proud of, I know I’m happy & proud for them. They finally released an album wow ha ha ha. It’s been like what…3 or 4 years? Congratz guys.
PS : Last complain, the cover is kinda hard too see from a distance. Check this image, sorry for bad resolution
